On a related note from Zed's questions about what to include in fibre packs...
What would you use silk carrier rods for?
What items from mixed fibre / lucky dip packs have you pushed to the back of a drawer because you can't think of a use for them?

Not from a lucky dip - just an impulse buy. Carrier rods from Oliver Twists at Woolfest 2012 . In a pre-dye vinegar soak flic.kr/p/ciMqomDyed and dried. Now what? flic.kr/p/qoCJzG

At the moment there isn't anything that I pushed to the back of the drawer. I'm too curious and want to try everything new. As for carrier rods, I like using them - not very often though. Once I bought some dyed ones from Sara's Fiber shop. You can make very nice leaves. I cut a piece of a rod and soak it in water first then start stretching it carefully. After that I split the rod into two and pull the ends carefull so that I get a king of a leaf in the end. I find that splitting rods helps because they are too thick and do not felt in well. Here is a detail from my handbag where I used carrier rods.

Nice piece Nada, I believe yours are the thin flat rods which I use a lot. Ideas for those thick stiff tubular ones gratefully accepted.

The only things I have but haven't tried are a carrier rod from Judith, like she described, but dyed a gorgeous red-only because it's too nice And again from Judith, Mulberry bark, because I don't want to waste it. I should try a bit though Flat carrier rods are nice to use: One of my favourite pieces, I have it framed next to my bed silk carrier rods after felting by zedster01, on Flickr I don't waste anything, so when I had a pile of bits left over from soaking/separating carrier rods, I let them dry and carded them: carded silk carrier rods by zedster01, on Flickr I blended some with Merino (top), and lay some out on top of merino (bottom) carded silk carrier rods and merino by zedster01, on Flickr After felting: carded silk carrier rods and merino by zedster01, on Flickr

Some interesting ideas here, Zed your rainbow piece is gorgeous, am I right in thinking you peeled off thin layers from the rod to get that effect?
Nada, your leaves are very effect and the silk still looks quite thick, did it felt in easily enough or did you need to lay some wisps of wool over the top?

I used some hand dyed carriers in my Pollack pieces from last years first quarter challenge feltandfiberstudio.proboards.com/thread/1228/first-quarter-challenge-jackson-pollock?page=4I also used silk pods (can't think of the term now). The rods can be stretched and after they are felted they aren't stiff any more. I don't have anything I can think of that I haven't tried. I usually try a sample. I also used a lot of my embellishments in the bookcover I made to use as a reference.

How did you use your silk cocoons Marilyn? The only place I have seen them used was on Fiona's SDO course.

I have silk cocoons too and I love them but never use them. I was going to use some to texture. There are some cool Malaysian ones you an get the are gold coloured and full of holes. Seems a waist to hide them under some wool of silk to make a lump. I am cleaning and sorting my draws in the studio again so I will probably find something in the back of one.

I have never used silk carrier rods but do like the effect shown in Nada’s and Zed’s examples. Are all of the narrow vertical pieces the rods?
I used silk cocoons only in Fiona’s SD class, but I did not care for how they turned out. Some of them got smashed in the felting process. There are so many other fun embellishments to use!
