Hello. It is nice to be here. I am from Northern Ontario, Canada. I am looking forward to being a part of this wonderful site! I am in the process of teaching myself how to felt, both wet and dry. For the most part, my experiences have been fun and encouraging. I just love creating pictures with wet felting and then embellishing with threads. I'm having a hoot using my felting machine. I love to speed along with it.
I am an embroiderer, so you can imagine my delight when i apply threads to the project! I love to do crazy patch work and so, felting is just a natural leap for me....non-conformist, organic, outside the lines kind of things.
My biggest hurdle at this time is knowing what supplies (wool products) look like and where to get them. I can't tell what I am purchasing over the internet. Being tactile, I want to touch the products to get a feel for them. As well, I am at the point that I need to be shown a thing or two. I need to get to a few workshops so that I can get some one-on-one guidance. That said, I do feel quite a bit of satisfaction whenever I manage to create something that I like! I do that exercise of self-congratulations by reaching my left arm across my right shoulder and pat my back - "bravo", says I.
Something else I need to find is a supplier of needles. I see that there are different needles for different types of surfaces and i would like to learn more about these. I would like to get some for my machine, as well as, for hand use.
Well, this ends my few moments of fame and exposure. Thank you. I look forward to getting to know this site and going down the road with you.

Hello SuzanneClaire!
Embroidery and handmade felt were made for each other - I love the combo.
Workshops are a good idea - it's surprising how much a group of like-minded people can help and encourage each other.
I've invested in some sample books from World of Wool and Wingham Wool because the colours are not true on screen. So much better to see a small sample of the actual wool.
Perhaps you could start your own sample book? Any thread, fibre or fabric that you have can be catalogued by putting a small piece in a book with details of it. Then replacement is easy.
Happy Felting New Year!

Welcome Suzanneclaire! You've come to the right place to learn and share. We would love to see some of your creations. I like the idea of organic outside the lines. Many of my projects end up being just that. If you haven't already checked out our blog, please do. Feltingandfiberstudio.com. We are always experimenting and learning.
As far as touch and feel, that's always best but not always possible. I'm lucky to have a shop only 18 miles away to touch and feel. However, I do end up ordering online. Outbackfibers.com, paradise.com, feltingsupply.com,dreamspinfibres.com are all good resources. Lyn makes a great point about ordering the sample guides. I have several and created my own when I buy from different sources. It's a resource right in my home.
Enjoy your felting journey and please don't histste to share. We love to share here. Happy New Year!

Welcome Suzanne! Glad you joined us and I look forward to seeing some of your work. I love organic and a lot of my designs are that way also. This site has some information about needle felting machines and replacement needles. They also sell the needles there. www.tryourdesigns.com/

Hi SuzanneClaire, and welcome to the forum We have quite a lot of info on the studio site about different wool breeds and animal fibres, if you scroll down a little on this post feltingandfiberstudio.com/2013/03/04/beyond-nuno-giveaway-winner-and-about-the-studio-site/there's a quick guide to the site. Or enter the wool breed into the search box for posts. It won't let you feel the fibres, unfortunately, but might give you a bit of info. And feel free to ask here anytime, we are all fibre addicts and like to try different types of wool and fibre. Lyn's advice is good about starting your own sample book. I don't have advice about needles, I bought a pack off ebay about 7 years ago and am still using them I think different sellers have different colour codes for the different shapes and sizes.

Hello and Welcome SuzanneClaire. I'm sure you'll enjoy this forum, it's very friendly and helpful. I'm not a needle felter so can't give advice on needles. I've had some for a few years, but use them very rarely. Looking forward to seeing some photos of your work.

Good day everyone! Thank you so very much for the warm welcome and offers. I can tell that I have struck the mother lode of information and like-minded people, for sure. I will be checking out the various places sited for me to look, as well as, as creating a 'samples' book for myself. Ugh, I have a samples book for my threads and ribbons - why didn't I think to do it for wools? Sheesh. What a great idea, Lyn. Again, I am grateful for your support, folks. Happy New Year! When I manage to get the hang of how to down load a picture from my camera and then, to place it on this site, I will do so. I am not the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to techie things and so, bear with me.
Blessings,
SuzanneClaire.

We do have some info in the FAQ's about adding photos here. Unfortunately sites like to change how they do things so make sure you read to the end where we've added any updates!

I live in Georgetown, Ontario and I buy my supplies from Gemini Fibres. (geminifibres@interhop.net) They have a whole range of needles and sell them in assorted packages as well. They are a mail order shop but also give classes (I'm one of their felting teachers). Hope this helps.

Hi Jane! Welcome to the forum. Do you mainly do needle felting? We'd love to see some photos. You can just start a new thread in the needle felting section or where ever you think your work fits.
