I wanted to try the new TAST stitch, and had been thinking of butterflies, so I grabbed a piece of scrap felt and decided to use that with a butterfly shape to practice my stitches. My initial thought was that I would cut the butterfly out as I thought of doing butterfly pins - hair ornaments - whatever. I found this scrap of felt, outlined a butterfly on the sewing machine, then started the cretan stitch to outline the butterfly. To make a long story short, I couldn't stop. I love the butterfly in its "natural surroundings" on the felt. So, the question is, what can I do with a piece of felt, 10 x 7 inches? Not large enough for a book cover. Should I just continue with my original thought and just cut it out or ........ (btw, the colors aren't very true as there is a lot less yellow in the felt and the butterfly is black, pale yellow and a lilac shade.) Butterfly1 by pamd8, on Flickr butterfly2 by pamd8, on Flickr

You could add more stitching to it and frame it. You could make it just the front panel of a book cover by trimming it and sewing it to the book cover. Or you could do the same and sew it to a bag or whatever else. I personally think you should add more stitching to make a 'scene' and frame it. The butterfly is gorgeous!!

Could you make a book mark? cut out the top part of the butterfly out and cut a strip the width of the tips of the bottom part of the wings. You could leave the butterfly sticking out the top. I would embroider the rest of the book mark to to stiffen it up.
I hope that makes sense.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Nothing hits me in the head right now and says "that's it", but I will keep thinking about it. I made another piece of felt this weekend (another small one) and just did the machine stitching of three butterflies on it. I may be sick of them before I finish- lol - but I had so much fun doing that first one that I thought I would continue, and perhaps this time I will be brave enough to cut them out and make them into pins.

They would make great pins That butterfly looks perfect on that piece though, I agree with keeping it on there or cutting out a large panel, but think keeping the whole piece as it is looks just right. The butterfly and the felt are both gorgeous.

You are probably looking at it from the wrong angle. if she cuts it out close the the stitching she can sew a safety pin on the back and pin it to anything she wants.
