The problem is that the bark is very thin and fragile and would not stand up to any felting. I’m racking my brains for a solution...

Cover the entire piece with sheer fabric and then stitch the sheer fabric down to the felt going around each bark piece?

Good idea, Ruth. The fabric would have to be VERY sheer to retain the visible texture of the bark.

You could cut the middle of the fabric out to reveal the bark. I can't see the picture it says it is not currently available.

I felted some dried flower heads and grasses into a piece which worked quite well. Just laid very thin wisps to hold things in place. Are you planning to use the bark featured on your Flickr page? It's beautiful. flic.kr/p/b5YWzV

All of your suggestions deserve a try--thanks, ladies. I will keep you posted on my experiments with bark. Cheers!

Marilyn, I will consider the glue as well. I had never realized how fragile bark can be before trying to use it in a collage! I wonder what kind of tree?

It looks like birch like mine Cathy.

looks like paper birch. I asked a friend that made a birch bark canoe and she says it will get more flexible if you soak it in warm water. You could put a few wisps of wool over the corners to get it to hold down.

what about adding the bark after piece is felted but felt still wet like Ann adds marbles to her bubble hats and then cuts the felt away after it has dried.

Judith, this is most beautiful. Didn't the flowers crush during felting?
