Well I guess I totally miss interpreted what was meant by land art. I thought it had to include felt because all the other quarters did.. Oh, well

I think here it should at least have a little felt. Having said that we are pretty tolerant of most things. I haven't quite got my head around what to do yet.

I think failures are as interesting as successes, hence this post. The summer has broken and we've had more rain than not, so getting into the garden is a challenge (it often seems to be not raining when I'm at work - doh!). In the true spirit of land art i.e. making something from gathered materials around you, I thought I'd form a butterfly and photograph it from above so it looked as if it were flying over the pond. Oh dear... ...I picked 4 blueberry leaves, 1 bamboo leaf and a pair of fuschia buds. I arranged them quickly on the water and it looked ok... ...but by the time I'd taken the photo the moving pond water had separated the leaves and started to lap over the edges of them, so instead of looking like a butterfly flying over the pond, it looks like a disintegrating, drowning butterfly. Can't win them all. I'd like to think of something that incorporates fibre, so the thinking cap is firmly on.

That's cool, Lyn! I think I'll stick to getting inspiration from photos Judy, as with all the challenges, the subject is inspiration only, so just like with Jackson Pollock, Monet, Stewart Stephenson, the idea is to find a piece which inspires you and make something using anything fibrey, whether that is wet or needlefelting, mixed media, stitching, knitting, crocheting, weaving, etc. For example, the Horse Chestnut piece I showed: Willow sculpture 04 by Jodiepedia, on Flickr could be reproduced by needlefelting or even wet felting, or maybe even wrapping yarn around a ball of yarn/string? The leaf flag: Land Art: Leaf Flags I by cproppe, on Flickr could be fabric, maybe organza leaves, or felt leaves, between two sticks, or secured to felted cords many land artists use pebbles, Carole has stacked pebbles, these can be recreated in felt. Lyn has a tutorial for felt pebbles: rosiepink.typepad.co.uk/rosiepink/how-to-make-felted-soaps-and-pebbles.htmlBut you don't have to copy something, you can simply use it as inspiration. I chose it mostly because we have talked a lot about sculptural felt this year and also a few of us have been using different breeds of wools, I just thought it would be different.

Aaah - of course Zed - I was taking it literally and quite forgot about the 'inspiration' bit. Righto, that'll make life easier.

Lyn, I like your butterfly. That was a cool idea. I still have no clue what I'll do.

I like the butterfly as well Lyn. Thanks for reminding us Zed that we don't have to take things too literally.

Sorry, I hadn't realised there might have been some confusion.

Sorry, I hadn't realised there might have been some confusion. Not your fault Zed - it's all us numpties! We kinda forgot about the whole inspiration thing.

Fabulous! As far as the challenge goes, the first image is spot-on because it looks as though you could have just picked up pretty rocks from around the stream and piled them up. Love it.
