I use a wet base for landscapes, then add fibers for embellishment. This process works particularly well for landscape effects. When I want fibers coming through, though, I do use the coarser fibers for best migration. I made some “granite” pieces the other day (photos to come soon) and the fibers came through nicely to create that striated effect.
Shana-- I love Lisa K’s work and hope to take a class with her next year. None of her dates this year worked for me.

Marilyn did you shave the hairy picture? It can make a huge difference. I remember Rod Walsh saying we felt differently and that's was why pictures sink in. his and his wife's were always crisp and bright. I think they live in Finland. I cannot find his website making me think I am remembering his name wrong. I have had funny migrations in the past. 3 layers of felt on a vessel all different colours with the idea of the colours migrating. The top and bottom layers migrated front to back and the middle one didn't move at all. It was very strange.

Ann, I did shave it especially in the dark areas. It helped to needlefelt over those areas to being back some dimension. I've not heard of Rod Walsh. Yes, it's always an adventure to see what works and what doesn't and all the surprises in between. :-)

Shana-- I love Lisa K’s work and hope to take a class with her next year. None of her dates this year worked for me. I hope you get to, as well. I've been waiting for Lisa to offer the class I want on this side of the globe for some time and finally get to go next month! Between what I'm learning now in Fiona's surface design workshop and Lisa's "sculpting the hollow form" course, my brain may very well explode with wooly goodness. (A very soft explosion.)

Shana, that’s exactly the class I wish to take but i have been booked for a long time for a Japan tour during those dates. I am joining Fiona and others for a Fall felting retreat in Quebec soon, so that will do until i can join Lisa for her sculpting class; and look forward to hearing about your experience.

Cathy both your trip to Japan and Quebec sounds wonderful. What kind of classes are you taking? ?

The class in Quebec is focused on making a slim tunic or dress and also a lamp shade. I am touring Japan for the sheer joy of it--no felting class included--although I would sign up if it were offered!

So here’s the “granite” piece I mentioned with fiber migration. It’s a base of moss green coop worth/corriedale and white domestic 56’s on top. The base did not come through until I fulled it well. granite effects by catwycliff, on Flickr

I love the effect of a curly wool migrating through a more fine fiber. It does look like granite.

Thanks so much, Ruth and Judy! Now I just have to figure out what to do with the “granite."

It is a beautiful piece. I was lucky to see it in person. I'm sure you'll find a worthy use for it Cathy!

I like that, Cathy We seem to have hijacked a thread about getting no migration to lots of migration (sorry Lyn!), so here's my contribution: My second vessel, mustard migrating through burgundy: Felted vessel by zedster01, on Flickr
