Glad you tried the experiment, Cathy and can't wait to see your pieces. I was thinking about the circumstances in which I used the GAC400 and got harder results. In most cases, the pieces are thoroughly saturated. As in "submerged" in the stuff. It's very messy and time consuming. And yes, I buy it by the gallon

Shana your work is magical, I love the 3D pieces with led lights in them, I've never heard of GAC400, must try it out :-)

Shana, I did find the GAC-400 very easy to work with, and it washed up just fine with dish detergent. I will definitely try the process again but will opt for the dipping and saturation as an experiment. I get bored easily, so I am always happy to try new techniques! Back to Dick Blick's tomorrow!

Just thinking about stiffening felted ropes for handles. Would it be possible to roll it in, to get it right through without too much 'puddling and dripping'? Or would this not work? Must take a trip to the Art shop for some.

That should work, but there will be some drips. You could coil the ropes and dip them into your solution, thoroughly saturate, then improvise a drip pan.

Hello Shana - I'm a bit late to this thread - it's fascinating and I love "Florathuroidea". I haven't done much in the way of stiffening, and the little I have done has been with CMC paste e.g. "Flotsam"With the GAC400, how do you encourage complete infusion to a fulled object? Do you wet it first?

With the GAC400, how do you encourage complete infusion to a fulled object? Do you wet it first? Wetting definitely assists in getting the GAC400 to soak in if it's a thicker piece, though you want to moisture level to be even throughout the wool. Let's say you've finished fulling a piece, rinsed it and either let it towel dry for a couple of hours or put it in a salad spinner.. that's a good time to apply the stiffener. I let gravity do a lot of the work, too. Applying the GAC400 to the top of a piece & working my way down. It really depends on the piece.

Finally, my circles project/mobile, wet felted, wired, needle-felted, GAC-ed and strung up with filament, brass rods, museum putty, and sculpey. I feel like I spent WAY too much time on this project, and still it did not turn out how I had envisioned it. So I'm setting it aside because I can't stand to look at it any longer! Cathy, it reminds me of some of the ceiling hangings at O'Hare airport between the b and f terminals. Very cool!

What was different in your original vision? It looks great and projects always take longer than you expect in my experience. Especially ones that you haven't done before and you're working it out as you go.

Thanks, Marilyn & Ruth.
You ask a good question, Ruth. I guess I expected this to look more dramatic, but I guess the real surprise was how long it took to put together. And, yes, working things out, getting the right materials, etc. Still, I don't regret the project as I always learn something with my experiments.

I like it Cathy. It would be great hanging in a tall stairway. Things always take longer the first time.

You are so right, Ann! And I do have that tall stairway--perfect for the mobile.
