A friend of mine recently send me a note card with a beautiful picture of Dale Chihuly's glass work. I was so inspired that I decided to make a felted piece from the photograph. I started with a homemade piece of white pre-felt and then needle-felted on the design. I've been working on it for a couple of weeks--on and off, that is--along with my other projects. I then wet-felted the piece, let it dry and then added some embroidery. I am tempted to continue to add more hand-stitching but I will probably stop right here.
Any ideas for how to frame or mount this one? It measures approximately 12 x 24 inches.https://feltingandfiberstudio.files.wordpress.com/2016/09/zszcqgtmcxnq_d5xadaq.jpg

This is fabulous. The colours and stitching are great. You could mount it onto a painted canvas.

Thank you so much, Lyn, Marilyn and Ann! Making this piece felt really good, and now I feel even better!!
Ann, this piece is such an odd size…does it make sense to allow large borders on two sides of the painted canvas?

Can you put a backing on it to stiffen it up so it won't droop off the sides of the canvas if it's smaller? I always have a hard time figuring out how to frame things.

Nice work Cathy and you must have been very patient to do all the stitching by hand.

Gorgeous piece Cathy, someone mentioned once either here or somewhere else about making holes in the backing of a picture frame and sewing your piece in place before putting the frame on, that makes sense to me :-)

Thanks Carole, Halay and Zed! I will think about the framing--always the most difficult part.

Cathy that's the same problem I always have my piece never fits a standard frame or canvas. I suppose I should plan more but I never do.

We listen to the felt speak to us. The design happens. Framing comes later. :-)

Great piece Cathy! You can buy stretcher bars to make your own canvas sizes. Dick Blick has them in a bunch of sizes. That is how I framed my ice flowers piece. Then you could hand dye a piece of heavy fabric as the cover for the stretcher bars. Then it would be the correct size. It's also easier to sew your felt piece on to the backing fabric first and then staple it on to the stretcher bars.

Thank you, Ruth! I knew eventually I would have to investigate stretcher bars, since none of my wallhangings seem to fit standard frames or canvases. Time to visit Dick Blick! I have referred back to your blog on finishing and framing and have carefully considered the various methods you recommend. At first, I thought of placing the Chihuly piece on a large black canvas and stitching it from the back, like you did--but that would be taking the easy way out, and I fear there would be too much canvas showing.
I will keep you posted on my finishing this piece.
P.S. Need to get one of those scary stapler guns, too!
