I came across this cute video of a small girl making a felted hat from alpaca wool using a ball www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EP_5JXkFWg , but having read your posts about alpaca, I wonder if such a short time of felting would be enough for the fibers to stick together and for the hat to keep its shape.

I have some alpaca I haven't tried yet. I wonder if it would help to combine it with wool. I have to do some samples.

Alpaca does felt well, it just takes a bit longer and it is a softer fiber than wool. I didn't watch the video but many times those don't show the full time it really takes.

I have some alpaca I haven't tried yet. I wonder if it would help to combine it with wool. I have to do some samples. I have felt alpaca alone and alpaca with merino. Both are nice but different. You must not expect a felt similar to merino with alpaca because you will be deceived. Alpaca is alpaca and merino is merino. Once I have accept that I was happy and pleased by my felted alpaca pieces. The alpaca mix with merino will definitely be firmer.

Crealou, I am in the process of a sample test and you're right it is different. I think I'd tend to mix them in the future.

Another mystery fiber, which I am guessing is either alpaca, angora or rabbit (after studying the blogs and photos)…can you help identify this fiber? I received these in a small bag, perhaps 4 ounces along with my previously discussed mystery sheep fibers. Promise, this is the last one! It's the softest fiber I've ever handled. Reminds me of an angora sweater, a rabbit hat, or perhaps alpaca. There are two different shades of creamy white to beige fiber. Haven't done any samples yet, Ruth! Can anyone identify this fiber? It looks like alpaca to me. Angora or rabbit is really very fine and fairly short staple and most angora I've seen is bright white. But again, really hard to tell from a photo.

Ruth, I was thinking alpaca, too, but have no experience with alpaca whatsoever. I have closeups of this same fiber on my Flickr page, if that helps. I will try some samples, mixing with wool, as I understand it is difficult to felt. Do you think it would make sense to use it with merino or a coarser wool fiber?

Some alpaca take longer to felt. I can't remember one type felts quickly the other doesn't. Angora is rabbit. Angora goats make mohair to make things confusing.

It isn't that hard to felt with alpaca. It just felts differently than wool. I would try it with merino since it is very soft and would still produce a very soft finish. I would also try some without merino just to see how it felts.

Now I understand why these fibers can be so confusing…so angora comes from rabbits, but the angora goat produces mohair! Well, I think I will sample felt the alpaca with dyed merino and then alpaca on its own. Will post results later!

Alpaca silk blend was one of the samples I did recently. It felted fine. I have some plain alpaca I will try as well. Have fun!
