It does take a bit of practice to get even batts. I agree with Ann that blending different fibers is the most fun part.

Well I had a real treat for Halloween and purchased a used Louet Junior drum carder from a local fiber artist who owns an alpaca farm. I found the listing on craigslist and emailed some questions, the woman who listed it works for the farm and put me in touch with the owner. I had visited her farm this summer when she had an open house. She was very nice and took some time to talk with me while she had a farm full of people. We arranged a time to meet to see the carder. She said she remembered me and took me up to her studio and proceeded to show me all her equipment and inventory. We also belong to a local art league. Talk about a small world. I had actually decided on a newer more expensive and bigger model and if hers had been sold that's what I would have gotten. However, I felt good about buying it from someone I had met and knew I wasn't sure exactly how much I'd use it. It really was gently used. She told me she bought it to blend fibers, but rarely needs a lot and finds it quicker to do by hand, so she barely used the carder. It only has a 4" width, but it's a medium tpi. I think it will work just fine for my needs. Besides if I find I'm putting it to good use and need a bigger one I'll make a bigger investment. After researching online, I think this model was from early 2000. Now I have to play with it. :-). Thanks to Zed for showing us that luscious autumn batt. It inspired me to try something new. Not as if I don't have a long enough list of projects to do.

Ooh, that looks nice I hope you have lots of fun with it You really are welcome to come and use mine, Judith. I did a lot of clearing out and moving stuff around, so I could use my craft things more easily, and now half my living room is stuff packed in boxes for when I move, and the other half is 2 tables with my drum carder and a stack of boxes filled with wool

Thanks everyone. I will post pictures. Sorry for the long story, but I thought it was funny how things work out sometimes. I shared the link for the forum with the woman I bought the carder from. I'm hoping she'll join us.

Ruth -- the project was for the exchange and another I'm working on now for the 4th quarter challenge. I'm sure you'll see it after sulasmom receives her package. :-). The brown turned out just like I wanted it to. So, one out of two isn't bad.
Ann -- I used the tencel/merino for a top layer. I probably should have used more tencel.. I think I did half and half. I'll know better next time.
